Orchestra

Brief introduction to the orchestra

The Orchestra of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya was founded in 2000 by Lluís Carné, also its conductor since then.

The Orchestra’s first concert took place on March the 21st at ETSAB, and has since participated in more than 200 concerts and events. It defines itself as an amateur orchestra in the word's widest meaning. Only a few members are professional musicians but most have a link with the UPC as students, professors or admin.

The main goal of the Orchestra is the pleasure of the team work required to rehearse and perform orchestral pieces. Very ambitious projects are carried out given the limited availability and resources, and the changing staff (presently about 30 musicians).

Lluís Carné also conducts the "Coral Arquitectura" (Architecture Choir), and most of the concerts involve both the choir and the Orchestra. In several occasions the Orchestra has also collaborated with other university choirs. The result of the semester's work is shown to the public in several concerts during autumn and spring as well as during academic events. A part from the concerts in Barcelona, the Orchestra has also played in many concert halls abroad: Balearic Islands, Valencia, Aragon, Basque Country, Galicia, Madrid, Avignon, Paris and Vienna.

The Orchestra's repertoire is very diverse in style: baroque, classicism, romanticism, opera, musicals and movie soundtracks. Some of the composers the Orchestra has interpreted are Bach, Händel, Mozart, Haydn, Brahms, Verdi, Rossini, etc, but also several catalan composers from the XIX and XX centuries.
